Construction is expected to begin in the summer or fall for a facility that will recycle approximately 400,000 metric tons/year of wastepaper (representing four million trees) into 330,000 metric tons of newsprint, or about oneeighth of New York City's total demand. Known as the Bronx Community Paper Company, the project has taken seven years of planning by the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Banana Kelly Community Improvement Association, a group known for rehabilitating and weatherizing housing in the South Bronx and helping neighborhood youths develop job skills.
